Bournemouth v Wolves: FA Cup latest, plus EFL, Bundesliga, La Liga and more – live

There’s been another goal at Selhurst Park. Palace are now 3-1 up, Eddie Nketiah getting his fourth goal of the season.

It’s official: Preston are through to the FA Cup quarters for the first time in 59 years. There’s bound to be considerable fallout from the match but, on the field, there’s little doubt the hosts were the dominant team.

Jos Buttler’s England reign ends in painful defeat by South Africa

  • South Africa (181-3) beat England (179) by seven wickets
  • England limp out of Champions Trophy with third defeat

Jos Buttler called the Champions Trophy a brutal format before the start of the tournament but in the end it proved mercifully short. Had this been a World Cup, stretched out over weeks to milk even more television money, England could easily have surpassed that bleak title defence in India 18 months ago by way of ignominy.

Instead, it was off to the airport, via the hotel, after this third and final defeat; the first time they have exited a global event without a single group win. South Africa, who topped Group B with a crushing seven-wicket win, were doing the same, even if the farcical schedule – dictated by India having to play all their games in Dubai – meant they did not know whether the gulf state would actually be the scene of their semi-final.

From Unforgiven to The Firm: Guardian writers pick their favourite Gene Hackman movies

After the death of the esteemed actor, writers highlight their favourite movies from a long and varied career

Almost five minutes go by in The French Connection before we get a good look at Gene Hackman. Various other operators come and go in William Friedkin’s gritty and unsettling procedural – based on a real heroin sting – before Hackman’s Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle emerges from behind an ill-fitting undercover Santa Claus outfit, like a background player busting into his first lead role. It’s as fitting an entrance as ever for Hackman, leveling up after his supporting work on TV and films like Bonnie and Clyde. And he gives a performance that sets the tone for his whole career, playing the brutal and racist cop, a morally murky figure who just doesn’t sit right as the hero of the story. Many of the qualities that made Hackman so great in later villainous roles – the way he moves like a menace with a devilishly charming grin, slipping so easily from comforting to antagonizing – are in Doyle. That detective’s infamous query, repeatedly grilling suspects about picking their feet in Poughkeepsie, is as mischievously disorienting as Hackman’s onscreen presence. Radheyan Simonpillai

Plane crashes have people freaked out – but here’s what US data for 2025 shows

This year’s 16 fatal accidents fall below average rate of 20 per month, yet recent crashes were US’s deadliest in a decade

People across the US are worried about flight safety after several high-profile plane crashes this year, including a commercial crash in Washington DC that killed 67 people. Google searches for “is flying safe” have jumped in recent weeks. But the numbers suggest 2025 has actually been a relatively safe year to fly – at least in terms of the overall number of accidents.

January and February typically have about 20 fatal aviation accidents per month, according to numbers from the National Transportation Safety Board. By contrast, this January, there were only 10 fatal aviation accidents, and in February there were six. The data covers all US civil aviation, from large commercial planes to private jets.

Holidays at a one-time Communist luxury beach haven? Yugoslav resort built for Tito to rise from ruins

Revolutionary leader’s derelict Adriatic getaway is on verge of a new life after starring in Kate Winslet film and hit Mr Beast YouTube video

With its spectacular views over the Adriatic and a half-moon beach, Kupari, near Dubrovnik, was regarded as the Monaco of what was once called the Yugoslav Riviera.

In the 1960s, the country’s Communist leader, Josip “Tito” Broz, ordered the building of a vast holiday complex exclusively reserved for members of the military on this hilly stretch of the Dalmatian coast. For the top brass there were individual villas; for the lower ranks, a choice of six hotels, while the foot soldiers were relegated to a camping site surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery.

Cappuccino nails, boho blouses and pilates pumps: Jess Cartner-Morley’s March style essentials

Are check prints the new floral? Are brooches really back? Our fashion guru has all the answers in her March edit

From Scandi brands to plastic-free fabrics: 10 women’s raincoats to style out drizzly days

We think before we buy these days, right? And so we damn well should. Shopping should not be a pastime. Style is eternal, not disposable. Each piece that has made the cut into my edit of March treasures has earned its place. A pair of £10 socks that are an instant wardrobe update. A £39 blazer that would pass for a designer investment. The ideal new-season nail polish for £8.

And you don’t have to buy anything at all for it to be worth having a look at my list. See below for my thoughts on what makes a boho blouse cool rather than twee, and a tipoff about the return of the brooch. That’s what I love about fashion: you don’t have to buy it to buy into it. But whatever you do, don’t buy anything until you read this.
