From Gaza to Texas: the race to save Mazyouna’s face – video

Mazyouna, a 13-year-old girl from Gaza, lost the right side of her jaw in an Israeli attack on her home in Gaza that killed her brother and sister. She was denied access by Israel to life-altering surgery abroad for more than six months. Only after the publication of a Guardian article condemning her treatment were Mazyouna, her mother and her surviving sibling granted permission to leave - her father was not permitted to join them. Their evacuation and specialist surgery at the El Paso children's hospital in Texas was facilitated by FAJR Scientific, an organisation that evacuates children in need of medical treatment from war zones.

Last month, the World Health Organization urged a rapid scaling-up of medical evacuations from Gaza where thousands remain in critical condition

Campaigners celebrate court ruling to ‘decolonise’ Kampala

After a five-year campaign, landmarks and streets honouring British colonialists will be renamed to reflect Ugandan culture

Campaigners have welcomed a court ruling to remove British colonial monuments from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and to rename streets that honour “crooks and historical figureheads”.

In last week’s high court ruling, Justice Musa Ssekaana directed the city authorities to remove the names of British figures from streets, monuments and other landmarks.

Shez Partovi, chief innovation officer at Philips, is excited about the benefits of new technology for patients and clinicians

Two decades ago, Shez Partovi was working as a neuroradiologist at the US private hospital chain Dignity Health in Arizona, and remembers listening to a lecture by a nun between seeing his VIP patients from Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Sister Margaret was talking about children with diabetes on Native American reservations just 50 miles from the private hospital, who had little or no access to medical care.

Partovi, now chief innovation and strategy officer at the Dutch healthcare company Philips, recalls: “She said: ‘I want you to remember there are people that are born, live and die never having seen a physician, and your job is to know that.’”

Lords watchdog investigates Labour peer over apparent cash-for-access venture

Lord Evans of Watford says he referred himself to standards commissioner after Guardian undercover filming

Lord Evans of Watford, the Labour peer facing cash-for-access questions, is under formal investigation by the Lords standards watchdog after undercover filming by the Guardian.

The Lords commissioners for standards announced on Tuesday that Evans, 82, was under investigation for potential breaches of the House of Lords rules, including a requirement for peers to “act always on their personal honour” as parliamentarians.
