Suspect in Kabul bombing that killed 13 US soldiers to face charges in Virginia

Officials accuse Mohammad Sharifullah of being a member of the Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate

A suspected senior planner in the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport that killed 13 US service members during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan has been taken into custody and will appear on Wednesday in federal court in the United States to face charges.

Donald Trump announced the arrest during his Tuesday night address to Congress, with the White House and the justice department subsequently identifying the suspect as Mohammad Sharifullah.

A British citizen captured while fighting alongside the Ukrainian army has been sentenced in Russia to 19 years in prison on charges of terrorism and “mercenary activities”.

James Scott Rhys Anderson, 22, from Banbury, Oxfordshire, was captured by Russian forces last November while fighting on Ukraine’s side during its cross-border offensive in Russia’s Kursk region.

The guidance, published on Wednesday by the Sentencing Council for England and Wales, has been hailed by campaigners as a huge milestone. It outlines a raft of new measures to stop criminals who are pregnant or mothers of children under one year old being imprisoned.

Isak targeted by burglars who stole £68,000 of jewellery, court told

  • Three members of same family plead guilty

A “professional group of travelling burglars” broke into the Newcastle striker Alexander Isak’s home and stole his car, jewellery worth about £68,000 and up to £10,000 in cash, a court has heard. The Sweden international was not in the house in Northumberland when the gang broke in through a glass door last April.

The thieves had already stolen jewellery and clothes worth more than £1m from a Tyneside businesswoman and designer goods worth £100,000 from a woman living on Wearside in the previous days, the court heard. Three members of the same family, living in Italy, have admitted conspiracy to commit burglary. A fourth family member, Valentino Nikolov, 32, denies the charge.
