Majority of western Europeans think Trump is threat to peace, survey finds

Most respondents in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and UK also say Kyiv’s exclusion from peace talks is unacceptable

Large majorities in five western European countries think Donald Trump is a threat to peace and security in Europe, a survey has found, after the US president assailed Volodymyr Zelenskyy and suspended military aid to Ukraine.

The YouGov polling of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK was carried out in a dramatic week that left Europe’s leaders scrambling to respond to the prospect of the US pulling long-term support from Ukraine and its European allies.

He was tortured in Turkey. He faced an immigration judge who almost never grants asylum

Harrowing story of ‘ES’, fleeing persecution to seek safety in US, shines light on judges who grant claims at exceptionally low rates – or not at all

At an immigration court in Pearsall, Texas, in front of a judge, government attorneys and a court interpreter, ES shakily recounted the darkest moments of his life.

He explained how he had been arrested seven years ago in Turkey, amid his government’s crackdown on followers of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gülen. The police officers who detained him accused him of being involved in a terrorist movement, and demanded he reveal the names of his associates, he said.

Toulouse v Bradford: the promotion race where results may be irrelevant

Both sides are determined to reach Super League next season but their match on Saturday might not matter at all

By Gavin Willacy for No Helmets Required

The favourites for the Championship title meet in the south of France on Saturday evening. It would be a surprise if the match between Toulouse Olympique and Bradford Bulls is not repeated at the end of the campaign in the Championship Grand Final. But what the 13 teams in the second tier are playing for this season remains unclear – and will still be unknown when autumn leaves begin to fall.

Toulouse and Bradford are the only two clubs still spending anywhere near the seven-figures usually required to reach the Grand Final. The removal of automatic promotion and relegation last year did not prevent the Championship winners, Wakefield, from replacing Super League’s bottom team, London Broncos, in the top flight this season. But that scenario is unlikely to be repeated this October, when the 12 clubs in Super League will again be decided solely by the IMG grading system. Winning the Championship may be about glory rather than promotion.

Los Angeles Chargers release five-time Pro Bowler Joey Bosa after nine seasons

  • Move will free up $25.36m in cap space for team
  • Linebacker was drafted by team third overall in 2016

The Los Angeles Chargers released Joey Bosa on Wednesday night, ending the linebacker’s nine-season tenure with the franchise.

The move, which came less than a week before the start of the new league year, was expected due to Bosa’s large salary cap number and injury history. Bosa had a cap number of $36.47m for the 2025 season, but the Chargers will save $25.36m in cap space.

Europe can’t just hope for the best with Trump. Ukraine needs all the arms we can send | Frans Timmermans

Member states must stop squabbling over trivial matters – and a firmer stance against states that promote Putin’s and Trump’s agenda is needed too

  • Frans Timmermans is a former vice-president of the European Commission

After US vice-president JD Vance’s speech in Munich last month, most European leaders came to the conclusion that our world has fundamentally changed. The Pax Americana that long ensured peace, security and freedom in Europe is over. Anyone who still doubted this will hopefully now realise, after the disgraceful treatment Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy endured last Friday at the White House, that we can no longer rely on the Americans for our collective security.

We must hope for the best, but hope is not a policy. We – the Netherlands, the EU, and all western countries standing with Ukraine – must prepare for the worst. The question is this: how do we keep Ukraine free and independent, and how do we protect our economy, our freedom and democracy, and our borders?
