Gillespie brands Pakistan successor Javed ‘a clown’ amid coaching row

The former Pakistan Test coach Jason Gillespie labelled his successor Aaqib Javed a “clown” and accused the former fast bowler of undermining him and ex-white-ball coach Gary Kirsten in order to take charge of the national team across all formats.

Gillespie’s comments were in reply to a social media post containing quotes from Javed a few days after hosts Pakistan had crashed out of the Champions Trophy without a win. Javed told reporters on Tuesday that Pakistan had changed 16 coaches and 26 selectors in around two years, and that any side would struggle in such circumstances.

HMV puts UK expansion on hold because of budget tax rises

Retailer had hoped to open more stores in Britain in coming year but will do so in Ireland and Belgium instead

HMV has put its UK expansion on hold and is to open stores in Ireland and Belgium instead, because of rising wage costs announced in last autumn’s budget that begin next month.

Phil Halliday, the managing director of the entertainment retailer, said it had hoped to open up to 10 more stores in the UK in the coming year but had put that plan on hold as it was “peddling pretty hard” to maintain profits despite strong sales growth.

Quarter-point cut to deposit rate, to 2.5%, comes as Trump prepares to impose tariffs on EU exports to US

The European Central Bank has cut interest rates across the 20-member eurozone for the second time this year, and warned that trade war fears are hurting Europe’s economy.

The Frankfurt-based rate setter cut its benchmark deposit rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 2.5%, in line with City economist expectations, as Trump prepared to impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from the EU.

Banks, investors and pension funds should treat weapons manufacturers as “ethical” investments so that more money goes to the industry to arm Ukraine and the UK, according to a group of more than 100 Labour MPs and peers.

Ninety-six MPs and six peers have signed an open letter calling for financial businesses to “sweep away ill-considered anti-defence rules which are acting as a barrier to doing what is right”, in another sign of the backlash against environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies.
