Europe is running out of hope Trump is still open to persuasion over Ukraine

Where the US president sees a convivial leader an ocean away, Europeans see a tyrant on its borders breaking all agreements

In the Four Quartets TS Eliot wrote “humankind cannot bear very much reality”.

At moments in history like these, when there is simply too much head-spinning change and too many postwar assumptions being ripped from their moorings, it sometimes appears too much for any human to absorb, let alone offer a response.

Just as Emery was getting hot under the collar on another awkward night at Club Brugge, the Villa manager booked for voicing his frustrations pitchside, a rare moment of quality snatched this game away from the hosts.

The mere presence of Asensio and Ollie Watkins seemed to spook Brandon Mechele into diverting Morgan Rogers’s superb cross into his own net and then Christos Tzolis clumsily chopped down Matty Cash and Asensio sent the subsequent penalty past Simon Mignolet. The cold reality is Villa toiled despite a dream start on their return to Belgium but it is hard to argue a two-goal advantage is not a sizeable buffer before next Wednesday’s second leg.

Wounded and sick children in need of urgent treatment crossed through Israel to reach King Hussein hospital in Amman

The patients were among the 4,500 people in Gaza believed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be in urgent need of evacuation, and they were transferred to Jordan by a joint operation by the Jordanian army, the country’s health ministry and the WHO.
