Transport for London launches campaign targeting ‘headphone dodgers’

Posters to appear on Elizabeth line asking passengers to be considerate and not play music or videos out loud

They are the scourge of the modern commute: passengers who play music or videos out loud. But amid widespread disapproval from fellow travellers, Transport for London (TfL) is trying to appeal to the better nature of “headphone dodgers” by asking them to “be considerate” and plug in.

The new posters, which will start to appear on the Elizabeth line this week – and on other TfL services, including London buses, in the autumn – remind travellers to use headphones when listening to music or making calls.

Birthday parties should be a time for celebration, but when my former United Nations colleagues meet to mark the organisation’s 80th anniversary next month, good cheer is likely to be in short supply.

The UN is in crisis. With the geopolitical picture at its most fractured in decades, this great institution is desperately short of funding and, more importantly, relevance. Across the critical conflicts of the modern world – Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan and others – the UN still plays a vital humanitarian role, but is relegating itself to an increasingly marginal place in primary peacemaking.

Flavours of Brazil combine with Lebanese and Italian influences in these deliciously untraditional dishes

Lebanese food is my go-to when I’m back in Brazil and I need a break from Brazilian food. My favourite Lebanese restaurant in Rio de Janeiro, Basha, makes the most incredible meat-stuffed cabbage rolls, charutos Libanais (which means Lebanese cigars and is the Portuguese name for the dish malfouf). They are served in a fragrant tomato broth and come with pimenta caseira (homemade hot sauce) and lime wedges to squeeze over, in a beautiful union of Lebanese and Brazilian cuisine that inspired today’s first dish.

Police urge people to ‘avoid the area’ amid ‘active incident’ at Porepunkah, 300km north-east of Melbourne

Two Victorian police officers are dead and another wounded after a shooting at a rural property in Victoria.

Police have confirmed they are attending an “active incident” at Porepunkah, in the state’s Alpine region after media reports an officer had been injured in a shooting.
