In the run-up to her crunch autumn budget, Rachel Reeves will seek to recruit a heavyweight economic adviser after the role of John Van Reenen is reduced.
Van Reenen, a well-respected professor from the London School of Economics (LSE) and an expert in productivity, has been chief economic adviser to the chancellor since Labour came to power.

Italy’s Jonathan Milan claimed his second victory in this year’s Tour de France when he won a crash-disrupted sprint in the 17th stage on Wednesday.
Milan prevailed in a 10-man sprint after the peloton was held up behind a massive crash with just one kilometre to go, as riders went down on slippery roads in a rainy finish in Valence. Biniam Girmay was attended to by race doctors after a crash with 1km to go.

The tournament in Switzerland has been full of surprises, especially when England are playing. Are you gripped?
The end is in sight and so is the trophy. And, somehow, England still have their eyes on the prize. Euro 2025 has been a tournament of unlikely comebacks for Sarina Wiegman’s team. They lost their opening game to France but rallied and made it through to the knockouts; they went 2-0 down to Sweden in the quarter-finals but came back to win a preposterous penalty shootout; and they looked beaten in their semi-final against Italy but somehow found an equaliser in the 96th minute and a winner in the 120th minute. The champions are not letting go of their trophy lightly.
